Orthokeratology, often called Ortho-K, is one of the most established contact lens options for childhood myopia control. The lenses are worn overnight and gently reshape the front surface of the eye while sleeping. In the morning, the lenses are removed and most patients can see clearly throughout the day without glasses or daytime contact lenses.

At Mark Hinds Optometrists, we recommend Ortho-K for suitable patients because it offers two important benefits: excellent daytime freedom from glasses, and meaningful evidence for slowing the progression of myopia in children.
The latest thinking in myopia management is that we should not simply correct blurred distance vision. We should actively monitor and manage eye growth. Myopia progression is closely linked with axial elongation, which is the gradual lengthening of the eye. Higher levels of myopia are associated with increased lifetime risk of eye disease, including retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy, glaucoma and cataract. Slowing progression during childhood can therefore have long-term benefits.
Ortho-K is thought to work by changing the way light focuses across the retina. Standard glasses correct central vision but may leave the peripheral retina with a focus pattern that can encourage further eye growth. Ortho-K reshapes the cornea to provide clear central vision while creating a peripheral optical profile that appears to reduce the stimulus for axial elongation.
Clinical studies consistently show that Ortho-K can slow axial length progression compared with single-vision spectacles. The evidence also tells us something important: not every child responds the same way. Some children respond extremely well, while others need additional strategies or closer review. This is why careful baseline testing, axial length monitoring and individualised treatment planning are essential.
At Mark Hinds Optometrists, we have been fitting Ortho-K lenses since 2003. Our approach combines experience with modern diagnostic technology, including corneal topography, axial length measurement and careful ocular surface assessment. We do not treat Ortho-K as a simple lens supply. We treat it as a clinical myopia management program.
We recommend Ortho-K because it can be an excellent option for active children, swimmers, athletes, children who struggle with glasses, and families looking for an evidence-based approach to myopia control. It is also reversible, adjustable and closely monitored.
Ortho-K is not suitable for every child, and safety depends on correct lens fitting, hygiene, compliance and regular review. For the right patient, however, Ortho-K remains one of the most valuable tools we have for both vision correction and myopia control.
